Dr. Amma Anima Benneh-Akwasi Kuma is a highly accomplished haematologist, educator, and researcher with extensive expertise in Haematology with special interest in haematological malignancies, sickle cell disease and haemphilia. She is the Head of the Department of Haematology at the University of Ghana Medical School, a Coonsultant Haematologist at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the Deputy Director for Academic and Social Affairs at the West African Genetic Medicine Centre. She also serves as the Director of the Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics, overseeing adult sickle cell disease management. Dr. Benneh-Akwasi Kuma is a Fellow of both the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the West African College of Physicians, where she actively contributes to postgraduate medical training and examination. She has held key leadership roles, including Vice President and Past President of the Ghana Society of Haematology, Faculty Secretary for the Faculty of Laboratory Medicine at the West African College of Physicians, and a member of the Technical Working Group for the National Sickle Cell Disease Strategy. Her research focuses on haematological disorders, sickle cell disease, chronic myeloid leukaemia, and blood transfusion medicine, with significant contributions to international collaborations such as SickleGenAfrica, BLOODSAFE, and the Ghana Sickle Pan- African Research Consortium (SPARCO). She has served as a and Co-Investigator on multiple high-impact studies and has received international recognition, including the International Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia Foundation Award for overcoming challenges in treating CML. A dedicated medical educator, she has led numerous haematology training programs, mentored postgraduate students, and contributed to curriculum development. She is an Examiner for the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the West African College of Physicians, as well as a Member of the University of Ghana Academic Board and College of Health Sciences Academic Board. Dr. Benneh-Akwasi Kuma’s work continues to shape haematology practice, research, and education in Ghana and across West Africa.
