Dr. Mohamed Zahir Alimohamed is a Molecular Geneticist, Genetic
Counsellor and Biomedical Scientist with an extensive academic and
research background. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology
from Manipal University in India and a Master’s degree in Molecular
Biology and Biotechnology from The University of Groningen in The
Netherlands. Dr. Alimohamed earned his Ph.D. in medical genetics
from the University Medical Centre Groningen, focusing on using
next-generation sequencing to diagnose genetic diseases such as
cardiomyopathy, spinocerebellar ataxia, cancer, and acute leukemia,
along with its implementation strategies. He then went on to pursue
a post graduate diploma in Genetic counselling and is among the
first practitioners in Tanzania.
Having completed two postdoctoral fellowships (Glocal) at both the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Muhimbili
University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Dr. Alimohamed
holds the position of Lecturer and Biomedical Scientist at the
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, MUHAS.
Additionally, he is a Research Scientist at the Sickle Cell Program,
Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion at MUHAS,
contributing significantly to the advancement of genetic research
and treatment options in Tanzania.
