Dr. Oyesola Ojewunmi is a Senior Research Fellow in Genomics at the Precision Healthcare University Research Institute (PHURI), Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), London, UK. His current work uses advanced methods to address genetic heterogeneity in genome-wide association meta-analysis of diverse populations and fine-mapping with emphasis on African ancestry.
His research also focuses on sickle cell disease, investigating genotype–phenotype correlations that integrate multi-omics datasets to unravel markers and pathways with biological and clinical relevance. Prior to this role, Dr. Ojewunmi worked as a Research Fellow in Genetic Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK.
During his postdoctoral fellowship at King’s College London, Dr. Ojewunmi led a ground-breaking genome-wide association study of fetal haemoglobin in Nigerian patients with sickle cell disease. His exceptional contributions in this role resulted in well-deserved awards and distinctions.
Dr Ojewunmi earned a BSc in Biochemistry from Olabisi Onabanjo University in Nigeria. He obtained an MSc and PhD in Biochemistry with Distinction from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
Oyesola’s research expertise encompasses various skills crucial for advancing genetic studies, from hands-on wet lab-based experiments to statistical-genetic analyses. His commitment to the academic community is evident through his active involvement in teaching, where he imparts knowledge and guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students, reflecting his dedication to training the next generation of researchers.
He is also committed to developing young African scientists’ capacity for genomics and data science. He has published more than 20 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and is a Review Editor for Frontiers in Haematology.
