Dr Patience Kiyuka is a Principal Research Scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). Patience is the winner of the 2022 Eric and Wendy Schmidt Award for Excellence in Science Communication and a former fellow at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Oxford, UK.
At the KEMRI–Centre for Geographic Medicine Research–Coast, she leads innovative public health initiatives focused on combating infectious diseases through advanced diagnostics and surveillance systems. Her work spans three critical areas: firstly, she coordinates genomic surveillance of high-priority pathogens, including dengue, chikungunya, drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis across Africa and Southeast Asia, generating essential data to track climate- and resistance-driven transmission patterns.
Secondly, she directs febrile illness monitoring programs that employ cutting-edge molecular diagnostics to identify causative pathogens and improve treatment protocols. Thirdly, her malaria research examines transmission dynamics in vulnerable populations, particularly investigating gametocyte carriage in pregnant women receiving preventive therapy while overseeing hospital-based surveillance of diagnostic accuracy and antimalarial resistance markers.
Together, these efforts aim to translate scientific insights into effective disease control strategies that address pressing public health challenges in resource-limited settings.
